About Wave of Writing  (WoW)

Dynamic Creativity!

Passion + Productivity = Progress.

Please note: Lindsey is certified in the Amherst Writers and Artist's method but this is *not* an orthodox AWA writing group. While she also facilitates those, this site is to introduce a hybrid teaching style based on her own method. The terms teacher, guide, class, students are used, none of which conform to AWA practices.

Too often our creative voices are strangled by criticism. Driven by a dedication to "strength-based feedback," WoW classes strengthen writing practice through in-class writing and nuanced positive feedback.

We begin with guided tapping/massage to free the body and open you to relaxed grounded focus.

From experienced writers looking for a surge of inspiration,

to new writers finding their voice,

WoW writing welcomes you.

Join an international community of creativity-driven writers from locations as diverse as Australia, Japan, Croatia, and more than 5 cities in the USA. This community has developed through direct connections and by word of mouth-- welcome to a wave of friendship and creative comraderie.

About your writing teacher

Classes are taught by Yale graduate Lindsey-Loon Ricker. At Yale University Lindsey wrote for the Yale Daily News, The Yale Herald and U'rim V'tumim. Lindsey holds a Masters from University of Melbourne in Australia, and a second graduate degree, from University of Queensland, also in Australia. Now based in Los Angeles, Lindsey is originally from Cambridge, MA. She attended Shady Hill School and was immersed in their intensive creative writing program from childhood. An avid writer, she won her first city-wide writing competition at 13. Lindsey's creative methodology is built from years of writing practice and study. In the past decade she has augmented her own writing practice with hundreds of hours of writing classes. These classes have included several years with the coaching of NY Times published author Robin Finn, founder of the "Heart Soul Pen" writing school,

and several courses with Hugh Fink, an Emmy-winning comedy writer and 7 year veteran of the staff of Saturday Night Live.

Lindsey brings a multi-faceted approach to teaching and storytelling. She is a trained actor and has been a standup comic for several years. She trained specifically in film acting at NIDA the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Australia, and has been in short independent projects in the USA and Australia that have screened festivals like SXSW, LA Shorts, and Woods Hole. As a comic she has played iconic LA venues such as the Comedy Store, the Chatteau, the Dojo of Comedy, the Haha Comedy Cafe, and Flappers. Over the Pandemic, she kindled her love of comedy by doing dozens of Zoom shows. She used to produce the weekly comedy and music series, Loons & Tunes.

She writes primarily fiction and comedy. Her students write fiction, personal essays, scripts, spoken word poetry, and a diversity of genres.

Lindsey founded the Connect Film Festival which has been running since 2014 (based in Los Angeles and Australia with events in Austin TX and Boston, for a total of 13 events since 2014). Connect Film Festival was honored out of > 4,600 festivals with a “Top 100 Best Reviewed” ranking in 2016, 2017, and 2018 by Film Freeway. Lindsey is experienced in the relationship building and communication necessary to maintain recurring events and curate a creative community.

WoW has given me such confidence and ease in my writing ability -- I feel like I could write anything!

“I’m typically an overthinking writer. I edit as I write, my pace is slow, and the journey is often more tedious than it ought to be. Lindsey’s class showed me how to let the words flow and helped me see that my voice is just as powerful when I do so. WoW has given me such confidence and ease in my writing ability -- I feel like I could write anything!”

I do more writing in Lindsey’s class than I do for the rest of the week. The structure she brings to the space is so helpful, and the creative prompts are just enough to spark flow without overwhelming. Sarah's physical warm-up has been a revelation. For anyone who speaks Aussie out there - Lindsey is a little ripper!

Lindsey’s warm and welcoming personality is a huge factor in the great success of this program. I’d always enjoyed writing but simultaneously also always struggled with starting.  Lindsey provided prompts or assisted students to find, create and share prompts which always lead somewhere. Lindsey taught me to trust the process and gave me strategies to ensure that I could keep writing. The positive feedback model that Lindsay embraces, created a safe environment which enabled me to share deep, personal experiences with near strangers. It has been an honour and an inspiration to experience the rich and diverse writing of others, including Lindsey herself. Lindsey is warm, genuine and an astute thinker. The perceptive and valuable feedback received from her as well as from other class members assisted me in editing my bare bones writing and see beauty and worth in my writing. In addition to her positively powerful classes, Lindsey also led me to useful resources and strategies to help me write in my own time. After only a few classes I already have a compilation of raw memoirs which I intend to have published.

Class is a positive supportive space… I’m feeling able to express myself in the way I’ve always wanted to, that I have value, I am worthy of writing and being heard… There’s a sense of connection and relatability.

Everyone comes from different backgrounds and occupations, but all have a want to express themselves. This is the class I didn't know I needed because it makes me show up and face myself. Then getting strength-based support is the most unusual format compared to all the critiques elsewhere who echo the inner critic.  So much positivity here.

"Lindsey is an amazing and inspiring writing teacher. She provides exercises that get your writing brain flowing and is always full of great suggestions when you get stuck or just need a spark of creativity. Her feedback is positive and constructive as needed and having her support through the long —and sometimes arduous journey — we all take as writers is invaluable. I highly recommend taking a class with Lindsey and experiencing her energy and creative generosity yourself."

"There are a few reasons why I decided to take Lindsey's online WOW classes. Her infectious positive energy and can-do attitude are always inspiring. I found this class, filled with supportive like-minded people to give honest criticism on my work invaluable as I build my writers portfolio. WOW allowed me to share my writing in a space that felt safe and supportive. This class allows freedom to build short pieces of work that can be developed further, or polished to stand alone as small ideas within a complication. If you take this class in the morning, it serves as a wonderful way to start the day and get the thought process going. Based in Croatia, writing in the evening was a way to divert from the day's activity and switch the thought process to something fun and challenging. Even writers' block is tackled as there are prompts if you need them and plenty of opportunities to express your writer's voice."

“Each class starts with a relaxation exercise that helps get you into a creative space. I’ve never written so much and been this creative in my storytelling. And it’s helping me in all aspects of my life.  I’ve been working with Wave of Writing for the past few months and it’s been brilliant!”
